Beyond the Curb: Designing Learning Environments that Support Every Student

This session explores the importance of learner-centered teaching in today’s evolving educational landscape. Attendees will learn strategies to create psychologically safe environments that encourage student engagement and foster a sense of connection. We will examine innovative teaching methods that promote critical thinking, adaptability, and personalized learning experiences that reflect nursing students’ varied life experiences, identities, and perspectives. Educators will leave with tools to design learning spaces where every student has a chance to succeed and feel seen. Join us to explore how to go beyond the curb and build learning environments where all students can thrive. 

  • Discuss learner-centered teaching and explore its significance in today’s evolving educational environment.
  • Identify strategies to support psychological safety in the educational environment.
  • Explore innovative teaching strategies that promote student engagement, critical thinking, and personalized learning experiences in the classroom and beyond. 
  • Examine competency-based assessment strategies that are fair, flexible, and responsive to varied learning approaches and strengths.

Jacquelyn (Jacqui) McMillian-Bohler, Assistant Professor & Director for Educational Excellence, Duke University

Jacquelyn McMillian-BohlerDr. Jacquelyn (Jacqui) McMillian-Bohler is an Assistant Professor and Director for Educational Excellence at Duke University School of Nursing. Grounded by her Masterful Educator Model, she mentors faculty and presents nationally on faculty development, fostering inclusive learning environments, and employing impactful teaching strategies. Her efforts extend to guiding nursing programs toward competency-based education and researching effective teaching practices and health equity. Holding degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Vanderbilt, and Villanova Universities, she has received numerous awards for teaching excellence. Beyond academia, she advances health equity through Cultural Intelligence workshops and a culturally concordant doula training initiative.
