Integrating Immersive Virtual Reality into Nursing Education: Lessons Learned

Dr. Beth Culross, 2020 recipient of 黑料吃瓜王鈥檚 Foundation for Academic Nursing Faculty Scholars Grant Program, will describe the development and implementation of Immersive Virtual Reality Simulations into a BSN program. Dr. Culross will describe integrated simulations for traditional and accelerated programs and findings from the first year of implementation. In addition, steps to development, including cost, faculty and student development, outcome measures, and space consideration, will be reviewed.

Beth Culross, PhD, RN
Assistant Professor and Director of Learning Resource Center
University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing
Dr. Culross has been a nursing educator at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing since 2008. She has been involved in simulation since 2004, starting in a role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist using simulation for staff development and training. Dr. Culross has received a Dean鈥檚 grant to develop simulation for the UNMC College of Nursing and has presented this work at a national conference. In 2017, Dr. Culross became the Director of the Learning Resource Center for the College of Nursing and was responsible for oversight skills and simulation of the five campuses of the College of Nursing. This includes maintaining the INACSL standards of simulation. Dr. Culross has earned a Certificate in Health Simulation Education from the Bryan Health College in Lincoln, NE, and her Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator certification from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. As an active member of both INACSL and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, Dr. Culross is the chair of the education committee for INACSL and conference abstract reviewer for SSH. Dr. Culross is working on expanding the simulation opportunities for students at UNMC through virtual reality.
Sue Schuelke, PhD, RN
University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing
Sue is a passionate nurse educator and researcher with experience developing educational strategies to enhance learning and clinical judgment. Her research has focused on clinical judgment, models of care delivery, transition to practice, and the innovation of IVR. Dr. Schuelke has worked with the University Computer Science and Engineering College and IVR companies to develop virtual reality scenarios and games. She has worked with a team to incorporate IVR into the CON curriculum, evaluating IVR in relation to learning, engagement, and immersion. She has submitted the findings of her work for publication and has presented regionally and nationally on IVR. Sue has worked on both the practice and academic side of education and is skilled in bridging the gap between the practice and academic worlds. Dr. Schuelke strives to use technology to enhance nursing education.
